Ten years after the Kumamoto earthquake, the oratorio "The Path of Light - The Love of Hosokawa Gracia" premieres in Tokyo.

The oratorio "The Path of Light: The Love of Hosokawa Gracia," which premiered in Kumamoto in January 2025 to great success, will have its revised version premiere in Tokyo in May 2026. This oratorio, which depicts the life of Hosokawa Gracia, the wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki, the second head of the Hosokawa family, the lords of the Kumamoto Domain in Higo Province, is a source of pride for Kumamoto. Hosokawa Gracia was the daughter of Akechi Mitsuhide and the wife of Hosokawa Tadaoki. She was also the mother of Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the first lord of the Kumamoto Domain. As a daughter of a samurai family, a wife, and a mother, she lived strongly and proudly through the turbulent Sengoku period, meeting a tragic end. Her life has been widely recounted around the world since its inception, and Gracia's way of life and spirit have been depicted in operas, dramas, and books.

This project began with the aim of holding performances in various locations starting in 2026, 10 years after the Kumamoto earthquake, to pray for further recovery in Kumamoto, and for peace and tranquility from the ongoing conflicts around the world and the natural disasters that continue not only in Japan but throughout the globe. We hope you will feel the spirit of Gracia embodied in the beautiful music composed by Minako Tokuyama.

Oratorio "The Path of Light: The Love of Hosokawa Gracia"

[Comment from composer Minako Tokuyama]
The key word in the story is "time." The opening quote from Ecclesiastes connects to Akechi Mitsuhide's "Now is the time! The enemy is at Honnoji Temple."
The theme throughout all movements is "time."
Pianist Fū Jitsukawa, who also conducted at the Kumamoto premiere, will now focus solely on the piano, using a renowned Bösendorfer piano.
The piano's internal playing techniques, the improvisation in "The Sin of Living," and the exquisitely beautiful solo of Gracia's theme.
The intensity of Gracia's death is also a major highlight of this work.
