Kumagai Tsuneko Memorial Museum Kana no Bi Exhibition "Kumagai Tsuneko traces modern tanka through Masaoka Shiki and Nagatsuka Setsu"

　The Kumagai Tsuneko Memorial Museum will be holding its second Kana no Bi exhibition since reopening.
　This exhibition will introduce kana calligraphy by calligrapher Kumagai Tsuneko (1893-1986), which reminisces about modern tanka. Modern tanka was created in the Meiji period as an effort to improve upon traditional waka poetry in order to reassess it. Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) was the man who initiated the innovation of tanka poetry in 1898 with the serialization of "Letter to Poets." After Masaoka's death, Ito Sachio (1864-1913) and Nagatsuka Setsu (1879-1915) developed the style into the Araragi school, and Masaoka's theories on tanka have influenced modern poets.

　After the war, calligraphy exhibitions were actively held, and new forms of calligraphy were born. Tsuneko, who liked modern tanka, created "Autumn Night" (1959), which was based on Masaoka's posthumous work "Take no Satoka," edited by Ito and others. Tsuneko also contributed to the development of kana calligraphy by publishing works such as "Autumn Sky" (1962), based on a tanka by Nagatsuka about the autumn twilight, and "Winter Peony" (1966), which expressed a tanka by Ito about winter peonies blooming on a frost-barred hedge. As calligraphy changes with the times, please enjoy Tsuneko's works, which pursued elegant kana calligraphy while respecting the classics and following modern tanka.
