Calligrapher Kumagai Tsuneko (1893-1986) studied under Onoe Saishu (1876-1957) and Okayama Takakage (1866-1945). In 1933, she exhibited Tosa Nikki (First Volume) at an exhibition held by the Taito Calligraphy Institute, to which both of her teachers belonged, and won the Tokyo Nichi Nichi and Osaka Mainichi Newspaper Awards. This article explains the calligraphy career of Tsuneko, who met Shibashu and Takakage and became active as a kana calligrapher.
