Wa-wa-wa Learning Center 2025: Experiencing Japanese Culture ~ Ko-tsuzumi Workshop

Learn about the kotsuzumi drum, the instrument that controls the unique sound and tempo of Noh and Kabuki

As a celebratory song in all four rehearsals賑々SqueezeBeautiful and gorgeousHinazuru SanbasoHinazuru SanbansoThey will learn how to hold and play the small drum from Mr. Fukuhara Tsurujuro, who also plays at the Kabukiza Theater. They will then present their results at the Ota Ward Japanese Music Association's "Wa no Kai" concert. They will perform together with Nagauta and Nagauta shamisen teachers.

Fukuhara Tsurujuro

Born in 1965. He was taught traditional Japanese music by his father, Fukuhara Tsurugiro, from an early age. From the age of 18, he performed in kabuki performances, dance recitals, and concerts at the Kabukiza and National Theater. In 1988, he opened a practice studio in Ota Ward, Tokyo. In 1989, he opened a practice studio in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. He became the master of the Hamamatsu Central Inspection Office. In 1990, he took on the name of the first Fukuhara Tsurugijuro. In 1999, he established a new school in Hamamatsu called "Kakushokan." He opened a practice studio in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture. In 2015, he opened a new practice studio in Kojimachi, Tokyo, where people can casually experience Japanese instruments other than musical instruments. He also regularly holds live Japanese music performances. In 2016, he opened the Shizuoka practice studio, Kakuseikai. In 2018, he established Wagoto Co., Ltd. In 2021, Wagoto Co., Ltd. produced the DVDs "Learn Ohayashi," "Learn Shamisen," and "Recommendation of Ohayashi with Kotsuzumi." He is a member of the Nagauta Association. He is the chairman of the Ota Ward Japanese Music Federation in Tokyo. He is an advisor to the Japanese Musical Instrument Promotion Association. He is a lecturer at the NHK Culture Center Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Asahi Culture, Yomiuri Culture Center Omori, and NHK Culture Center Iwaki. He currently lives in Tokyo. He performs and teaches Japanese music and promotes it in various places, mainly in Tokyo.
