Furniture is not recognized as a cultural property or work of art in Japan
"Furniture Tools Indoor History Society Chairman / Registered Tangible Cultural Property Showa Living Museum Director, Kazuko Koizumi"

Showa Living Museum, which preserves and opens the houses of ordinary people built in 26 together with household goods. The director, Kazuko Koizumi, is also a researcher in the history of Japanese furniture interior design and life history, which represents Japan and serves as the chairman of the Japan Society for Furniture and Tool Interior History. In the turmoil of the post-war era, she met Sendai chest of drawers, and she went on to study Japanese furniture.

In the old days, unique furniture was made by each region.

I heard that you started a furniture design company after studying Western painting at Joshibi University of Art and Design.

"It was 34. It's a small company with only three people, the president and me, and I designed it. I also did accounting and design. At that time, the level of furniture was generally very low. Clothes Even in the tan, furniture with veneer boards on both sides of the wooden frame called the flash structure was popular. Since everything was burnt down in the war and nothing was left, anything is fine regardless of the quality. I was wondering if something could be done. "

Please tell us about your encounter with Sendai chests and Japanese furniture.

"At that time, I went to the Japan Folk Crafts Museum * in Komaba. I've been to the Folk Crafts Museum from time to time since I was a girl. He talked to me while eating rice crackers. When I went to work on furniture, the curator told me that Sendai seems to be making interesting furniture.
So I went to Sendai.I arrived in Sendai in the morning and went to the street where furniture stores were lined up, but all the shops were lined with only Western chests of drawers.I was disappointed that it was such a different thing, and when I suddenly looked at the back, there was a person who was repairing something old.He told me that he was still making old-fashioned Sendai chests, and I immediately asked him. When I visited, I was surprised that a young girl came from Tokyo, and my old husband told me various old stories.I was impressed by the warmth of the people who have been doing traditional work in rural areas, or the humanity of people who have worked sincerely. "

There were many craftsmen left.

"The house had been exporting Sendai chests since the Meiji era, so it seems that Sendai chests were known abroad. It was a design that foreigners liked. When the troops arrived in Sendai after the war. However, there was a demand for Sendai chests, and I continued to make them. Not only in Sendai, but in the old days, unique chests were made in different regions, but in the Showa era, they were standardized into Tokyo chests. , Except for the Sendai chest, it has disappeared. "

No one was studying the history of furniture. All are self-taught.

After that, I became a research student in the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering, University of Tokyo. What was the trigger?

"I was studying furniture history while working as a furniture store. The first book I published was" Modern History of Housing "(Yuzankaku Publishing 34) at the age of 1969. Other teachers about housing Written and I wrote about furniture. Supervised by Professor Hirotaro Ota of the history of architecture at the University of Tokyo. I became an architectural history research student. "

You did research before you went to college, and you published a book, didn't you?

"Yes. That's why I started my research in earnest. Since research on the history of furniture was an undeveloped field, I used the research method of architectural history and proceeded with my research by groping. I'm self-taught. When I started researching myself, I wasn't completely interested in it one after another. "

No one was interested in furniture.I didn't know the cultural value.

Can you talk about furniture as art?

"Furniture has both practical and artistic aspects. Some furniture is practical, while others are fine and culturally valuable as works of art. However, furniture is a cultural property in Japan. The value is not recognized. It is called Ryukoin in Daitokuji * in Kyoto.TowerTatchu.Secret hermitageMitanIt is a temple that holds many national treasures such as a tea room and Tenmoku tea bowl. There was a simple, beautiful, high-tech desk.Founder'sKogetsu SotoiCancerIt is a writing desk that (1574-1643) used. This person is the son of Tsuda Sōgyū, a tea master along with Sen no Rikyu and Imai Sokyu. When I looked into the desk, I found that it was a morus alba desk devised by Rikyu. It is a desk that can be designated as a national important cultural property.Ryukoin is a famous temple with many national treasures and is visited by people from the Agency for Cultural Affairs, but since no one pays attention to furniture, it is not known and is not evaluated. "

I cherish it as a founder's thing, but I didn't think it was a work of art or a cultural property.

"There are many such examples. This is the story when I went to the Manshuin * in Kyoto to find out. It is a temple where the second prince of Prince Hachijo Tomohito, the prince of the Katsura Imperial Villa, was established during the Edo period. The early Sukiya-style Shoin-zukuri architecture. The Shoin-zukuri is the palace of the lord, the Sukiya-zukuri is the tea room, and the one that is one is the Katsura Imperial Villa.
There was a dusty shelf in the corner of the corridor of the Manshuin. It's a little interesting shelf, so I borrowed a rag and wiped it.In terms of architecture, it was a shelf built by Sukiya-zukuri Shoin.Until then, the furniture of the aristocrats was Shoin-zukuri style such as lacquer lacquer work. For the bran of the top bagSoft brocadeZenkinI had a brocade edging. It is also Shoin-zukuri.On the other hand, the shelves were sukiya-style and had the bare wood surface. It is a shelf made by Sukiya-style Shoin. Moreover, it is a valuable shelf with a long history that is the earliest and you know who used it.But no one was aware of it.As it is, furniture is not recognized as a cultural property or a work of art. I was interviewing "Japanese Art Japanese Furniture" (Shogakukan 1977). "

Everyone was aware of that.

"Japanese furniture has classical style, Karamono style, sukiya style, folk art style, and modern artist's work. Classic style is lacquered crafts as I mentioned earlier.MakieMakie-Urushi-eUrushie-RadenRadenEtc. may be applied.Furniture used by high-ranking people such as the emperor and aristocrats.Karamono style uses rosewood and ebony with Chinese design.Sukiya style makes use of the bark that developed with the tea ceremonyJoineryJoineryIt is furniture of.The folk art style has a simple design and finish that developed among the people from the Edo period to the Meiji era.The works of modern artists belong to wood craft artists since the Meiji era.Until then, furniture was made by craftsmen, and instead of being a writer, he became a writer in modern times.Furniture comes in many different times and types and is very interesting. "

Wasn't Japanese furniture historically studied until the teacher studied it?

"Yes. Nobody was doing it in earnest. Therefore, when I made Yoshinogari Historical Park, there were people in the history of architecture in the building, but no one knew about the interior, so I restored the room. No one is doing so much furniture and indoor history.
Another big part of my work is research on modern Western-style furniture and restoration and restoration based on it. "

The furniture was abandoned without repair.

The teacher is also working on the restoration of furniture in Western-style buildings, which has been designated as an important cultural property nationwide.

"Arisugawa TakehitoArisugawa no MiyatakehitoRestoration of furniture in the villa of His Imperial Highness, Tenkyokaku, is the first. It was 56 (Showa 1981).Naturally, various old furniture remains in the architecture of important cultural properties. However, the Agency for Cultural Affairs does not designate furniture as a cultural property. For this reason, furniture is thrown away when the building is repaired. At the time of restoration, the governor of Fukushima Prefecture said that Tenkyokaku was Mr. Matsudaira and was a relative of Arisugawanomiya. So it seemed that Tenkyokaku was like the house of his relatives, and the furniture was restored and restored under the direct control of the governor. With all the furniture, the room has become lively and beautiful. As a result, furniture of important cultural properties nationwide has also been restored and repaired. In the vicinity of Ota Ward, the furniture of the former Asaka Palace, which has become a garden museum, is being restored. From Yoshinogari to the former Asaka Palace residence, I am supposed to do it. "

Please tell us about your future activities.

"I'm writing the history of Korean furniture now. I'm planning to write it soon. And I have another thing I really want to write. I'd like to publish two books that will be the culmination of my research."

What is the content of another book?

"I can't say it yet (laughs)."

Shopping street x art + bee!

I want to carefully connect people and books
A picture book shop where you can enjoy teaTEALTeal GREENGreen in Seedseed villageVillage'
Shopkeeper: Yumiko Tanemura

From Musashi Nitta Station, cross Kanpachi Dori and turn right at the nursery school gate, and you will see a shop with a wooden sign on the white wall.It is a picture book shop "TEAL GREEN in Seed Village" where you can enjoy tea.The back is a coffee shop, and it is a space where you can relax even with children.

I want to make the most of the location of a bookstore in a residential area.

What made you start?

"Kugahara's Kugahara Sakaekai (Minamikugahara) had the first teal green. It was a very nice picture book shop, so I used to go there as a customer. It was like that.
When I heard that the store would be closed in January 2005, I really missed the disappearance of such an attractive store from the local area.I was wondering what to do with my second life after my child-rearing had settled down, so I spent a year remodeling my home and relocated here on March 1, 1. "

Please tell me the origin of the name of the shop.

"The name was given by the previous owner. Teal green means the dark turquoise on the male head of the teal. The former owner was a designer. Among the traditional Japanese colors. It seems that he chose this name from.
Inseed Village is from my name, Tanemura.Tyr-Teal flew away from Kugahara and landed in Chidori. And the story that seed village = arrived at Tanemura's house was made by the previous shop owner at the time of renewal opening. "

Can you talk about the books you are dealing with?

"We have about 5 picture books and children's books from Japan and abroad. We also have postcards and letter sets for writers. I want you to write a letter. After all, handwritten letters are nice. . "

Please tell us the concept and features of the store.

"I want to make the most of the location of a bookstore in a residential area. I want customers to feel closer to the world of books by holding a cozy event unique to this store.'

I think that it is possible to grasp the essence of it because it is an adult who has various life experiences.

What is the charm of the world of books?

"When I was worried since I was young, I feel that I have overcome the words in the book. I want children and adults to come across such words. Children and adults, let alone children, have various experiences. I can't do all of them, so I want you to use your imagination in the book to experience more. I want you to live a rich life. "

Do you want adults as well as children to read it?

"I think that adults who have various life experiences can grasp the essence of it more deeply. It is often the case that adults realize things that they did not notice when they were children. Books are limited words. Because it is written in, I think that you will feel the world behind that word more as an adult.
Teal Green also holds a book club for the general public. It is a meeting where adults read the boys' library and share their impressions. "When I read it when I was a kid, it seemed like a scary person who didn't know what the character would do, but when I read it as an adult, I can see that there is a reason for that person to do that. The way I felt was quite different from when I was a kid. I thought that if you read the same book many times in your life, you will see something different. "

I hope people will find that the world of picture books is fun.

Children can enhance their imagination, and adults can understand the world deeply because they have experienced life.

"That's right. I just want children to enjoy it only when they are children, without thinking about difficult things. Adults want to be useful, but it's purely a picture book. I hope people will find that the world is fun.'

What are the criteria for choosing the artists and works that you handle?

"It's a picture book, so the picture is beautiful. And it's a text. It's also important that it's easy to read aloud. I often choose a story that has a sympathetic ending that gives hope. Children read it. I like something that makes me think "Oh, it was fun" or "Let's do our best again". I want children to read something as bright as possible.'

I try to have the opportunity to hear the story directly from the artist.

In addition to sales, you are engaged in various activities such as original painting exhibitions, gallery talks, book clubs, talk shows, and workshops.

"Now, there are many original picture book exhibitions. At that time, I have the opportunity to hear stories directly from the artist. What kind of thoughts do you have when making books, and how long does it take? When I hear the story of the writer, I think I'll read the book even more deeply. I'm glad that everyone who participated was impressed and returned with a radiant face. , The story-telling party for picture books is the same, and I am happy to hold such a sense of unity.'

Please tell us your future plans.

"In April, we will hold an exhibition of original drawings by a publisher called" Mekurumu. "The publisher was launched by the editor alone in 4. That is the original drawings of the four books published in the past year. It's an exhibition. It's a difficult time for publishers. I thought it would be great if I could support them.'

The fact that the editor started it by himself probably has a strong feeling for him.

"That's right. I'm sure there was a book I wanted to publish. I think there was a book that I could publish if it couldn't be published by a large publisher. It's interesting to know that feeling, isn't it? Since books are made by people, they always have people's feelings in them. You want to know that.'

I want to deliver the books that the person really needs.

Please tell us about future developments.

"I would like to make steady efforts to connect books and people. People who come to our store want to give gifts to such children, so they bring us their thoughts on what kind of books are good. Each one I want to carefully connect books and people so that I can meet my wishes.'

Unlike mail order, they come directly to the store.

"Yes, most people ask and hope for a book to read at such times, such as a book that can be relieved when sleeping at night, or a picture book that makes you laugh with your child while talking. While doing it, I can somehow feel who it is and what the situation is now. It is not only for adults but also for children. What are you interested in and what kind of play are you doing? While listening to something like, I recommend you to try this kind of book. The next time you come, I'm very happy to hear that your child was very pleased with the book. Events are also a way to connect books to people, but the basic idea is to hand over books to each person. I want to deliver the books that people really need.'
